Getting a PR (Permanent Resident) in Singapore is like trying your luck in a lottery shop. You'll never know if you will get it or not. I've been staying in Singapore for 5 years now and I tried applying for 3 times.
There are a lot of speculations as to how a PR application gets approved. Some say that it's the salary, or the race, or the "flavor of the year", but I don't think that's the case. Some people even with a 2k sgd salary gets approved while the 9k sgd gets rejected or vice-versa, some people whose race is Chinese gets rejected and some other races get approved or vice-versa. We wont be able to tell the reason why the application gets approved/rejected and the government won't tell you as well.
My application might be a little different as I am married to a Singaporean, but being married to one doesn't entitle me to get it easier than other people who apply based on their own merit (this is one of the misconception of others, that if you get married to a Singaporean, you're gonna have a PR or citizenship easily. WRONG! :D)
I used to have an SPass (type of employment pass in Singapore), after my marriage, my husband applied LTVP (long-term visit pass) for me. I am still eligible to work in Singapore using this type of pass, as companies can apply LOC (letter-of-consent) in order to work legally. Below is my journey of getting my PR.
FIRST ATTEMPT 2015:
My profile:
Nationality: Philippines
Race/Ethnicity: Filipino
Education: Degree holder (recognised in Singapore)
Salary: 1,+++ sgd
Years/months of marriage: 6 months (it's crazy to try I know, it's too early, but our motto is "you never try, you'll never know.)
Offspring: zero, we got no kids
His profile:
Nationality: Singaporean
Race/Ethnicity: Chinese
Education: Diploma holder
Salary: 4,+++ sgd
Years/months of marriage: 6 months (it's crazy to try I know, it's too early, but our motto is "you never try, you'll never know.)
Offspring: zero, we got no kids
- we wanted to get PR as soon as we can because of the HDB flat application and other benefits of it compared to LTVP (but hey, we should be thankful that atleast we have LTVP right? :D)
RESULT:
Rejected after 3 months, exactly 3 months yo!
SECOND ATTEMPT 2016:
My profile is exactly the same except for the company I'm working for and my salary
Salary: 2,+++ sgd
Years/months of marriage: 1 year and 6 months (never give up LOL)
His profile:
Salary: 4,+++ sgd
RESULT:
Rejected after 3 months, exactly 3 months AGAAAAAIN!
THIRD ATTEMPT 2017:
My profile is exactly the same except for my salary
Salary: 3,+++ sgd
Years/months of marriage: 2 years and 6 months (we will never give up)
His profile:
Salary: 5,+++ sgd
RESULT:
APPROVED after 3 months, exactly 3 months!
just imagine the happiness that we felt, I even cried inside the uber car when I was checking the application status online (the driver panicked LOL, he thought I was going crazy like someone died haha). I immediately called my husband to tell him the good news. So the thing here is, never give up. It's worth trying whenever you get the chance. You may not get it the first time but who knows, second try, or third, or even fourth. We were told and discouraged by a lot of people saying that we won't get it because we don't have kids or the marriage is just fresh, that some people took 10 years or 5 or 6 before getting it, that some has 3 kids and still can't get it. We didn't listen but instead, we created our own path. Just keep trying :)
My next post will be a simple guide for completing the formalities once your PR is approved. Stay tuned.
